The reinvention that never stops.
I grew up in Barranquilla, Colombia, competing in basketball, tennis, and soccer from elementary school through university, representing my region and my country at every level. Sport was never a hobby for me. It was a discipline, an identity, and a way of understanding what I was capable of.
When I arrived in the United States, I spoke only Spanish. I enrolled in English classes. I showed up at Montgomery College and practiced with their basketball and soccer teams, not as an official player but as a mentor, a motivational presence, a woman who had already competed at university level and wanted to give something back. I became their motivational speaker.
I earned a Master's degree at Florida State, then a Ph.D. Along the way I added Portuguese as a third language. I joined the faculty at the Kelley School of Business at Indiana University. And in 2024, after years of preparation, I stepped on stage for my first natural bodybuilding competition — and won every class and the overall title. Four days later I was at my first nationals.
After thirteen years, I earned my green card on my own. I went home to Colombia to see my family for the first time in years. I share this not for applause but because there is someone reading this right now who needs to know that the distance between here and the goal is crossable. I have crossed it. More than once.
